Smoked Baked Beans Recipe (Video and Post)

Once again, I’m having some fun on my new Trager Grill! I’m filling a cast iron pan to the brim with fresh ingredients and beans and slow cooking them together with smoke to make this fun smoked baked beans recipe.  It’s a perfect side dish for a summer BBQ uniquely bringing smoky flavor to your side dishes to pair perfectly with your main course.

This idea started when I was making ribs for the first time and I saw some empty space on the smoker. I thought it didn’t make a whole lot of sense to leave space open on the grill! We heat the whole thing, don’t we? So here’s what I came up with at the last minute … or to be precise, the final four hours. The kids nicknamed this dish smokey, brown and farty (but don’t tell mom- that’s a bad word); needless to say they loved it … for the entire next day. This post has Amazon affiliate links.

Consider our Smoke Pulled Pork, Then you can make pulled pork eggs benedict and our pulled pork sliders with the leftovers. We have other great smoked recipes at LiveDan330.com too. For a quicker dish, make our chicken wings toward the end of your time with the beans.

These beans were fantastic the way we made them but I have a few tips I learned this time around. So make sure to read the whole blog post, of course, I’ll share them as appropriate.

Ingredients

  • 1 onion
  • 1/4 pound of bacon
  • 2 cans baked beans
  • 1 jalapeno
  • cayenne
  • Paprika

Equipment Needed

I placed affiliate links to good products I like below. I think it’s nice to know you are getting good equipment and I make a few bucks on it which helps fund this hobby.

Chop your onion and bacon into bits and lay on the bottom of your cast iron pan. Take a quick note at the time, if you are cooking this for less than 6 hours, you will need to adjust the recipe slightly by frying the bacon about 3/4 of the way on the bottom first and then add the onion. If you are cooking it longer than six hours, it will get plenty of cooking time on the grill or smoker.

Place on indirect heat on grill or in you smoker.

As the beans are smoked, the dish’s flavors will meld together and the top will become crusty and infused with smoke.
