How To Make Cold Brewed Coffee Beer At home

Looking for something fun to try to mix things up a bit with your favorite beer? Try this homemade coffee beer recipe to add a little flavor and caffeinated kick to your microbrew.

Coffee Beer

A lot has already been written about how to make a micro-brew with coffee. Since we don’t brew our own beer, and frankly didn’t want to test this idea on that large of a batch, we had to find another solution. We wanted to enjoy a nice local beer from our neighborhood brewpub and give it an extra kick and flavor.

What we came up with was a very simple cold brew coffee beer. We played around with the idea and came with a sure-fire method of making a great coffee flavored beer.

Select Your Beer

The first step in making your coffee beer is finding a good beer. I traveled down to my local brewpub and got a blend of a porter and a blond that was on special. I think any dark beer would be a candidate for this homemade cold brew, you just need to find a beer that would pair well with coffee.

Brew The Coffee Into The Beer

Blending the beer itself with coffee is easy.  Grind the coffee grounds and pour it into a french press. We also tried to pour beer through a coffee filter but it flattened out the beer more than the press did. We thought it was more desirable to do a very slow french press.

Using a French Press To Make Coffee Beer

A french press is a common type of coffee maker. In the container, mix coffee grounds with the beer and let it steep, cold, for ten minutes or so. You could do it longer if you pleased. It won’t hurt the beer.

After the beer and coffee steep, use the top of the press and SLOWLY move it to the bottom to trap all of the coffee grounds. If you move it quickly, it will create a large head on the beer. Take a few minutes to do this. It will not force the bubbles out of the beer if you are slow enough.

Pour Your Homemade Coffee Flavored Beer

Once the press is all the way down, it is easy to pour the beer into a glass. We used a small shot glass in this demonstration. To give you an idea on the quantity of coffee, we used as many coffee grounds as we would have used to make a single pot. However, this french press was about half a pot so there is a lot of caffeine and coffee flavor in the beer. We thought it was a wonderful sipper and helped as a pick-me-up on a late night.
